Account ledgers, often overlooked in genealogical research, can often provide information regarding families not found in other resources. Account ledgers of merchants often help to establish who was living in the vicinity and what they were purchasing. Account ledgers of doctors often provide births or visits to a sick family member which can help to establish an illness or death.
Diaries and journals can give insight into the everyday life of an individual or can list births, deaths and marriages.
Our magazine, known as The Settler, has been published since 1953. Every magazine has been digitized and is available for purchase as a digital download in our online book store by clicking on the link below (the contents of each issue are listed in the book store, or you may search a word in the search box at the top of the website). Digital members also receive free access to the complete collection or parts of the collection, depending on the category of membership chosen. Researchers may also review hard copies in our library.
The Bradford County Historical Society published the first Annual in 1906. Ten more were published over the next several years. They were printed in Towanda at the Bradford Star. They contain some information not found in other published documents. Several articles have illustrations.
In addition to our own periodicals, we have those from other organizations in Bradford County, such as: The Sayre Quarterly, the Canton Area Historical Society Newsletter, the LeRoy Heritage Museum Monogram, the Tuscarora Township Historical Society newsletter; and other magazines from counties bordering Bradford County. Of particular note is the Wyoming Historical and Genealogical Society volumes that include many references to early county history prior to 1812.
Over 3,000 family surname files exist in our collection and new family files are added on a regular basis. Some of these files are extensive, containing years of research and correspondence. If you would like further information on a particular family file, or would like to know if the surname you're researching has been added, please call or contact us through the website.
The card files contain thousands of births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and other genealogical information abstracted from old newspapers in our collection.
Edward Hoagland was born September 28, 1908 in Wysox, Bradford County, the son of Orlin Hoagland and Agnus Coolbaugh. He developed a love of the history of Bradford County and compiled genealogical records on many Bradford County families. Before his illness, Rev. Hoagland donated a 68 volume set of manuscript books to the Bradford County Historical Society. Known as the Hoagland Collection, these books are indexed and available to the public for research. The collection contains history, genealogy, and letters. Rev. Hoagland died September 11, 1994, and is buried in his native Wysox.
